What is the best way to apply for a job at Tikinagan?

If you are in Sioux Lookout, you can visit our Administration building at 65 King Street (open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CT) to drop off your resume & cover letter.

And of course, you can apply online at http://careers.tikinagan.org/careers and click on the job you are interested in. From there you will see an Apply Now button and be prompted to fill out the online application. There are areas in the online application to upload your resume and cover letter.


Why do I have to submit a Criminal Records Check?

Because of the nature of our services, Tikinagan has to make sure that the children and families we serve are safe and that the staff we hire don’t pose any risks to clients. One of the measures we take is to have new staff provide a criminal background check.

All successful applicants require an application for, or a current, Criminal Record Check (CRC). A Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) for those positions working with children will also be required.

You do not need to supply a CRC in order to apply for a position. However, it is recommended that applicants apply for a CRC as soon as possible as successful candidates will be asked to supply this before they can start working for Tikinagan.

Will Tikinagan pay for my Criminal Record Check (CRC)?

No, applicants are responsible for the cost of their own CRC. The cost varies depending on your location and police service provider.

What else do I need to know about CRCs?

A photocopy of a Criminal Record Check or a copy of the request for a Criminal Record Check must be presented to Tikinagan Child and Family Services prior to the commencement of employment and a copy will be kept on the employee’s personnel file.

When a Criminal Record Check reveals one or more prior criminal convictions, it does not necessarily mean you cannot work for Tikinagan. In order to determine if we can offer or continue employment, we will consider the particular circumstances of each case, including;

  • the nature of the offence(s)
  • the length of time since the conviction(s)
  • mitigating circumstances, if any

Who do I contact if I want to see if my application or resume was received?

If you’ve submitted an application online or via email, you should receive an email stating that your application was received. If you faxed, dropped off or mailed your application, you can call HR at (807) 737-3466 or email hr@tikinagan.org to check if it was received.

I was interested in a job and can’t find it on the site now, where did it go and can I still apply?

Many of our positions have deadlines. If a position has expired, it is removed from our website. While we do not accept resumes and applications for expired positions, there’s a good chance that there is a similar position available or that the position you were interested in may be reposted in the near future.

For these reasons, it never hurts to call HR and let them know you were interested in a position. They can let you know if there’s something else you might be interested in or if you can submit your resume for future consideration if that position isn’t filled. I don’t have a few of the qualifications for the job I’m interested in, can I apply anyway?

Absolutely! While our qualifications outline what we look for in the successful candidate, we also value our applicants’ culture, life-experience and ability/desire to be trained to meet qualifications. If you aren’t successful in your application, we may see your potential for another vacancy here at Tikinagan. I have had a child protection file with Tikinagan or another child welfare agency, can I still work for Tikinagan?

If you have an open child protection file with Tikinagan or another child welfare agency, you should disclose this during the application process. If you have ever had a child protection file with Tikinagan or another child welfare agency, there is usually no concern if the file has been closed.

Do I need my driver’s license?

For some of our positions, having a valid Ontario driver’s license is necessary, especially for transporting clients. If it is absolutely required, we will state this in the job posting. However, some of our positions ask for this as an asset and we encourage you to apply if this is the case. You would be expected to arrange your own transportation to and from work.

Do I need to travel a lot?

For many of our positions, travel is a part of the job. For some positions, it may be required from time to time. If you are interested in a position and have questions about travel, please feel free to ask HR during the application process.

What kind of training is provided?

Tikinagan provides mandatory orientation for all new employees. This orientation takes place in Sioux Lookout. It covers our policies and information you need to know as a new employee. Your HR representative and/or new supervisor will inform you of your orientation date(s) and assist you in arranging travel through Tikinagan’s travel department.

Tikinagan also provides mandatory training for individuals working in specific positions working with children and families. This is to ensure all employees know what their job is, how to conduct themselves and the duties of their new job. Training, travel and costs are always covered by the agency.

Additionally, we provide ongoing training in different areas through our training unit. Your supervisor will let you know which training is mandatory and which is elective. We believe in giving our employees the tools to succeed and provide services in-line with Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin, putting children and families first, and always respecting the culture in which we operate.

What should I include in my Resume and Cover Letter?

Your resume should include:

  • your name, address, phone number and/or email address
  • previous work and volunteer experience
  • skills related to the position you are applying for
  • Three (3) References. Two of which should be employment/volunteer related

Your cover letter should include:

  • Your name, address, phone number and/or email address
  • The position and competition # you are applying for
  • One-two paragraphs summarizing your skills, qualifications and reason why you are interested in the position and why you would be a good candidate

Remember that your resume and cover letter are our first impression of you and can help us get to know you a bit better. It gives us a good idea of why you’re applying, why you would be a good fit and how your past experience and skills are relevant to the position.
