The Rights of Foster Parents
- The right to recognition and acceptance of their status as members of the healing circle
- The right to a clearly defined working relationship with Tikinagan
- The right to know all the information about the foster child that is necessary to care for that child
- The right to participate in the Plan of Care for any foster child placed in their home
- The right to preserve and maintain their own family
- The right to the supervision and support of Tikinagan
- The right to participate in training and learning opportunities
- The right to state complaints and grievances against Tikinagan practices or services affecting the foster child or themselves
- If they have provided continuous care for a foster child for six months or more, the right to be notified of any court hearing involving the child, to attend the hearing with or without a lawyer, and to make submissions to the court. (CFSA s. 39(3))
- The right to receive 10 days notice of a proposed removal of a foster child from their home if the child is a Crown Ward and has lived with a foster parent continuously for two years. Foster parents are also notified of their right to review the decision to remove a Crown Ward. No removal will occur before or during the review process unless there is substantial risk to the child's health or safety. (CFSA, s.61 (7), (8), (9))
- The right to respite care (earned at 2 days per month and accumulated up to a maximum of 4 days)
