RE: Neegaan Inabin Services for Youth and Young Persons

On April 1, 2023, the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services launched a new directive “Preparing Youth for Successful Transition from the Care of Children’s Aid Societies” also known as “Ready, Set, Go”. The purpose of the directive/program was to connect youth with additional services and supports to prepare them for success after leaving care. This directive/program replaces Continued Care and Support for Youth.

As of May 31, 2023, Tikinagan decided to have all youth and young people participate in Neegaan Inabin Services, an Indigenous approach for our youth that recognizes their culture, heritage, transitions, connections to their communities and the concept of the extended family. Thus, supporting the safety and well-being of First Nations youth in a way that is culturally appropriate during transition to independence.

Upon review of Tikinagan’s current legal agreements for our young people between the ages of 18 to 23 years, there are a number of Continued Care Support for Youth Agreements (CCSY) still in place that have not been transferred into a Neegaan Inabin Support for Youth Agreement (NISYA).

Our intent is to connect with units to ensure Neegaan Inabin Support for Youth Agreements are completed and in place for young persons who are eligible, by March 31, 2024.

This would include closure of child care files on the same date.
