The Prevention Program is made up of a central Sioux Lookout-based unit and community-based Prevention Coordinators. We work to:

  • develop and host activities, workshops and programs
  • connect families and children to community resources

What does Prevention at Tikinagan look like?

Prenatal, Infancy and Early Years Programs:

  • Prenatal care and education
  • Baby basics
  • Parent-child programs
  • Toys and book lending libraries

Children’s Programs:

  • Breakfast for learning
  • After-school programs
  • Organized sports
  • Day camps and summer camps

Youth Programs:

  • Land-based and traditional training
  • Healthy lifestyle and life-skills training
  • Recreation and activity programs
  • Suicide awareness and prevention

Parent and Family Programs:

  • Parenting education and caregiver training
  • Homemaking skills
  • Parent support

Community Programs:

  • Basic needs support (food banks, clothing cupboards, etc)
  • Resource libraries
  • Traditional programs
  • Community gatherings
  • Community enhancement (cleanups, construction projects)

We operate under a service model called Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin, which means ‘everyone working together to raise our children.’  In the true spirit of Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin, we love to collaborate with other community services!
